With all the recent controversy surrounding The Dipset as a whole (and particular video featuring founding member Cam'Ron in his boxers and a wife-beater), you could see how one could come into this review having to constantly remind them self that they are supposed to be listening to the quality of the album and not who 'Cam is dissing. That being said you can't let the beef(s) over shine The Diplomats, due to one simple fact: They have an undeniable roster of rappers. With each one a little more lyrical than the next, all equally talented, and all coming hard as ever, this mixtape is well worth a trip to the local bodega or corner store.
On "More Than Music" Juelz Santana demolishes the beat, and runs laps around the (if any) competiton. Santana spits, "I put ya chick in the coupe/if she thick and she cute/they love it when I hit the button dismiss the roof/damn, he just had a hard top/now look.. his car got a bald spot./While ya jaw drop/Her draws drop/Damn shorty got a bald spot." The "More Than Music Vol 2" mixtape provides a glaring spectrum of exactly who Dipset is as a whole. Also featuring tracks from 40. Cal, Jimmy Jones,Jha Jha, and Freekey Zeekey, the album even features Dipset's newest member Comedian/rapper Katt Williams on the song "Get That Money", which is suprisingly good. J.R. Writer's track "Its Over Pt. 2", features haunting piano keys, and a slow, gloomy bass line similar to a 2007 version of the movie Halloween's theme song.
A couple of the beats are horrible though including "Suga Duga" and "Dipset City," which have this sound similar to early 80's television theme songs. The beat in itself will taint your mind with thoughts of Cam, and the rest of Dipset in turtle necks and sweater vests running down steps in the P.J's.
But, with 16 tracks in all, this is a great combination of their trademark Harlem swagger, lyricism, and anthems that have made The Diplomats a definite fixture in the NY Rap game.
