Tru Life: Tru York Mixtape Review

TRU LIFE: TRU YORK hosted by J-LOVE
Fire Rating: FIYAH ! Warning, Danger,Evacuate the premises.
Tru Life claims to be the sound of New York Rap. And when you have the likes of Jay Z and Snoop Dogg slated to executive produce your debut LP, you could make that claim and have people pay attention.
On the mixtape intro Jay-Z claims that Tru is the anti dipset, some who "won’t run or back down." His street credibility in tact, Tru pokes fun at Dipset over track titles such as "The Dips Is Ova," and " In Dem Jeans,"as he makes references to Jim Jones tight jeans and says that Juelz Santana should drink nutriment to get his weight up. Jokes aside, Tru proves his depth on tracks such as "My Life," featuring Memphis Bleek and "Family Portrait." And on "I Hate Rap," he responds to a prison letter from someone who blames rap for their downfall. Over top notch production he drops a club ready track on "Doors Go Up, "and manages to get an assist from Snoop Dogg on "NY, LA."
"Tru York," has definitely generated a strong buzz for Tru Life, but he’s going to need a lot more radio spins before he can truly be accepted as a leader of the hip hop movement in New York or any place else. - David Lopez
