Lil’ Wayne sold 1,005,545 copies of Tha Carter 3 in its opening week – a feat not done since 50 Cent did it back in 2005 with The Massacre LP.
You got to give Weezy his props, the whole Carter 3 was leaked a week prior by Charleston, South Carolina's DJ Chuck T who was upset with Wayne’s disparaging comments about mix tape DJ’s.
Weezy later reneged on his outburst and said his frustration was in intended for a DJ by the name of The Empire only and not the whole DJ community. Regardless people could have got it for free but his popularity catapulted his him album sales pass the milli mark.
I don’t think he is the best lyricist out there, I mean Kanye outshined him on the “ Lollipop remix” and there’s a host of artists that are more prolific including Nas, Jay-z and one of my personal favorites Black Thought of The Roots. That being said he might not be the best, but he remains the hottest. Something makes him stand out, whether it’s his dreadlocks, outrageous verses like "she said she wanna lick the ( Condom)wrapper, so I let her lick the rapper," or when he plays his guitar in front of 50,000 people at New York’s Summer Jam like a rock star.
Weezy does what he does, and a million fans have responded making him the popular as in "Pop artist," but he’s definitely not the best.
